Walk around the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo, along with the many streets around this bustling historic area. This is the very heart of historic Rome and wherever you walk, you are sure to find famous monuments, palaces or museums. Everything is within a 2-mile walking radius making sightseeing easy.
The world-famous Piazza di Spagna owes its present name to the establishment of the Spanish Embassy in the early 17th century; it was previously called, in fact, Piazza di Francia from the Church of Trinita dei Monti built in 1720 by the kings of France. On the square is the Keats and Shelley library, part of a small museum where the English poet Keats died and in the middle of the square is the Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Old Boat), designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini's father, Pietro.
Just up from the library is Babington’s Tea room, a must at 5:00 pm for British inhabitants and tourists: enjoy a cup of tea and scones! Opposite the Spanish Steps is the number one shopping/cruise street in Rome - Via Condotti, so called from the conduits built by Gregory XIII to carry the waters of the Acqua Vergine to the lower part of town. Italian and international stars make an afternoon cruise here a must! The Antico Caffe' Greco (n.86)- over 200 years old, is where Lord Byron, Goethe and Liszt would stop for their morning break, an espresso and a croissant - and this is where Casanova is said to have waited for his assignments!

- VATICAN - ST. PETER - THE SISTINE CHAPEL – Piazza Navona, Fontana di Trevi
AM
Morning tour of the VATICAN, ST. PETERS, and SISTINE CHAPEL together with your private guide, meeting arrangements to be made at your convenience either at your hotel or directly at the Vatican.
St. Peter’s is certainly the most well-known basilica in the world, made even more famous in recent novels and films by popular writer Dan Brown in his Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. Within these religious walls lie works of art (including Michelangelo’s “Pieta”) covering almost 2000 years of history. The Basilica was originally built where the Apostle Saint Peter was believed to have been buried. The current basilica was inaugurated in 1626 and only later the square in front was planned and completed with its colonnade by Bernini.
Open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Climb into the dome, entrance from the portico: open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Explore the Vatican Museums’ collection of Egyptian, Etruscan, Roman, Renaissance and Baroque art, works by Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio and Canova as well as the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel.
LUNCH – Your guide will suggest a lovely lunch venue for you all to enjoy!

CASTEL SANT'ANGELO was the Pope's wartime fortress. An underground passageway connected the Vatican with the Castle. It is built on the ruins of Emperor Hadrian's tomb and very unusual in shape and content, used for over 1,000 years by Popes. A climb to the very top offers an unforgettable view of the city including St. Peter's dome, the Tiber River and the terracotta roof tiles of Rome.
From Castel Sant’Angelo you’ll walk across the bridge and venture into the Campus Martius area, in 7 B.C. wonderful fields of grass and buildings and hills which reached the river’s edge. Here you’ll visit Piazza Navona, Circus Agonalis, once a stadium now a setting for people to gather and admire the two great works dominating the square: Borromini’s S. Agnese church and Bernini’s fountain of the four rivers with the Nile covering its face in horror!
One more stop: the Trevi fountain. I will leave all details to your guide of this monument made international by Federico Fellini.
